Every Student Should Do Some Voluntary Work – Denis Smajlović, 2.b

Volunteering is an altruistic activity where an individual provides services for no social or financial gain. I believe every student should do it occasionally and  would  benefit from such activities. There are so many opportunities that offer voluntary work, but the majority of students tend to ignore them. But why do we avoid activities that have many advantages and offer us to give back to our community?

Firstly, when volunteering we have a chance to meet many new people and start expanding our social circle. You also become acquainted with current issues of the society that are usually not widely discussed in the media (problems of marginalised groups, such as the homeless, child refugees) and that can broaden your horizons. Therefore, you become more self-aware and open minded.

Additionally, volunteering combats feelings of depression and anxiety, which many of us experience, especially during an exam season. It increases self-confidence and provides you with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can help become more communicative, organised and it can also bring you out of your comfort zone, thus it causes personal growth, which is especially important in your teen years. I believe that we can discover our strengths through voluntary work and these experience can help seniors decide which college they would like to enrol in. Moreover, it can enhance our CV later on, when applying for a certain work position.

At Jesenice Grammar School we have many options to do practice voluntary work as well. There are many activities, most of them are associated with Žarek Society (Društvo Žarek). Žarek Society is helping young people cope with their problems, such as addictions, learning disabilities and giving advice as well. At Jesenice Grammar School we usually help young people with learning problems or others that need some explanation from another person than their teacher. We have the option to give a hand at various concerts, from being hosts to helpers carrying chairs. We can also participate in representing our school at special organised events or selling different goods at baazar.

I was a member of Žarek Society and last year I helped children from Prežihov Voranc Elementary school. I experienced great pleasure when helping those in need and I felt extremely delighted when children passed the exams they have had difficulties with. I am planning to involve myself in some other activities soon.

To sum up, volunteering is a very diverse activity, which has many advantages.  I believe that every student should participate in some voluntary work as they can benefit greatly from it. Volunteering is for sure a path that leads us all to becoming kinder, which is nowadays a rare trait.

PE Should Not Be Graded – Miha Zore, 2.b

Physical education also known as PE is a class that pupils and students are required to take in school. It is obligatory in primary and secondary school and it aims to develop children’ physical competence, knowledge of movement and safety. I agree that every child must participate in it and make an effort. However, I think it should not be graded.

As a student of Jesenice Grammar School I have noticed that some of the students have difficulties with PE subject. The majority of them are obese or simply not in good shape. As a result, they are unable to do sporting activities as good as their peers. I believe it is not their fault in having poor physical abilities and it is unfair to compare them to others who are overall in a better shape.

Furthermore, students love to compare their physical condition, among others. Students with better performance often like to intimidate students with worse one. I think that those students feel incompetent and unimportant. This can later lead to low self-esteem and sense of inferiority.

To sum up, I believe physical education is a great school subject, where children can relax and brush other school problems aside. However, I think PE grading system could be adjusted to the physical capability of student or not be graded.

What Is The Point Of Sports Days – Tomaž Kusterle, 2.B

Many students try to avoid this days, but are they really that bad? Why do students find them so annoying?

In my opinion, these type of days are very good for students, especially for our generation. Our generation, known as generation Z, is known for being born into the world of internet, smart phones and other technological devices. We grew up with technology, so it has a huge impact on our social lives.

More and more students sit behind their computers and do not exercise enough. Sports days force those people to go out and burn some calories. Not only do they get some much needed exercise, they are also on fresh air, which is good for their health.

Sports days can also be lots of fun. They give you an opportunity to spend time with your schoolmates outside of school, where the atmosphere is more relaxed.

I personally really enjoy sports days, because I do not have to sit behind the desk and study all day. I think there should be even more days like this if that is possible.
